In a hole beneath the floorboards, Silas Marner, the linen weaver, keeps his gold. Every day he diligently works at his artisanal weaving, and every evening he takes out his gold to lovingly hold the gleaming coins, counting and caressing them again and again. The villagers fear him, and he has no family or friends. Only gold is his companion, his joy, his reason for living. But what if one night a thief comes to steal his gold? What will Silas do then? What can console him for the loss of his only friend?
