When Black Beauty first learns to carry a rider on his back or pull a carriage, he initially finds it difficult. He's fortunate, however; his first home is a good place, where the owners are kind people who would never be cruel to a horse. During the nineteenth century, many people were harsh toward their horses, treating them like machines until they collapsed. Black Beauty quickly learns this, and as he talks about his life, he shares many moving stories.
