Felix has lived for three years and eight months in an orphanage in a convent, high in the mountains of Poland. But Felix is different from the other orphans; he is absolutely convinced that his parents are still alive and will come for him. When a group of Nazi soldiers burns the nuns' books, Felix fears that his Jewish bookseller parents are also in danger. After escaping from the orphanage, Felix begins a long and perilous journey through Nazi-occupied Poland. Along the way, he meets the little orphan Zelda and the kind dentist Barney, who hides and cares for Jewish children. But when the Nazis discover them, Barney makes the ultimate sacrifice for the children.
