This practical guide is intended for English teachers and pre-service teachers. It offers a compelling argument and a range of creative methods for integrating literature into language teaching. The content is divided into three parts. Part I addresses the questions: Why teach literature? What should we teach? How should we teach it? Part II presents a range of student-centered activities for classroom use and homework, suitable for every stage of the study of a literary work. Detailed descriptions of the activities are accompanied by numerous sample worksheets. Part III demonstrates how techniques can be applied to complete texts, and shows how activities from Part II can be applied to specific novels, plays, short stories, and poems. All the activities described have been successfully implemented with diverse classes from intermediate level onwards.
