The Guardian's Mark Lawson praises Celeste Ng's masterful depiction of the devastation parents can wreak on their children and on each other. 'Everything I Never Told You' tells the story of Lydia, the apple of Marilyn and James Lee's eye. She has inherited her mother's vibrant blue eyes and her father's jet-black hair. Her parents hope Lydia will realize the ambitions they themselves couldn't: Marilyn wants her daughter to become a doctor, not a housewife, while James hopes Lydia will be popular at school and the life of the party. However, Lydia carries burdens that go beyond just growing up in a small Ohio town in the 1970s. James is an American from a family of first-generation Chinese immigrants, which makes their family visibly different. When Lydia is found dead in the local lake, James is wracked with guilt and embarks on a reckless path that could destroy his marriage. Marilyn, overcome with grief and vengeance, is determined to hold someone accountable, no matter the cost. Lydia's older brother, Nathan, suspects local rebel Jack is involved. Yet, the youngest member of the family, Hannah, offers more than meets the eye and might just be the one who knows what really happened.
